Are Implant-supported Dentures Better Than Other Dentures?

Traditional dentures rest atop your gums and aren’t secured unless you use messy adhesive. Implant-supported dentures, however, are permanently installed via implants that are surgically inserted into your gums. There are two types of implant-supported dentures, bar-retained and ball-retained, and the style you select depends on your personal preference and your dentist’s recommendation. Bar-retained implant dentures are affixed to a curved metal rod to which the implants are secured. Ball-retained implants have ball-shaped attachments that are secured into sockets on the denture. Both are equally reliable and secure, and the cost is about the same. If you want more information or to schedule an appointment, call our office in New Haven and let us help you.

Do Implant-Dentures Work and How Do I Get Them Installed?

Implant technology has been used successfully for more than 50 years, so it’s been proven to work well. The biocompatible titanium posts used will integrate with your jawbone so that the denture becomes a permanent part of the bone. When denture implants are properly installed and properly maintained, regardless of the style chosen, they can last for decades or a lifetime.

Implant-supported dentures have an acrylic base that looks like natural gum tissue, and the base contains either acrylic or porcelain teeth that look like your natural teeth. Unless you tell others that you’re wearing dentures, no one will ever know. Typically, denture implants are installed on the lower jaw, but they’re suitable for both upper and lower jaw applications.

The installation procedure encompasses two or three office visits and several months. During your first appointment, your dentist will prep the sites and then install the biocompatible titanium posts. After the sites have completely healed, which can take up to six months depending on your physiology, you’ll return to have your dentures affixed to your posts. Occasionally, the entire procedure can be performed in one office visit, but this is up to the discretion of your dentist. Ask if this is a possibility for you or call our office to schedule a consultation with an implant dentist.

What’s the Cost for Implant-supported Dentures?

Your implant-supported dentures cost will be unique to you and will be influenced by the type of implant you select, any additional dental work that you need, the number of appointments you require, and any insurance benefits that you have. During your initial consultation, we’ll provide you with a detailed cost estimate so that you’ll know the cost of denture implants in New Haven. If you need implants but can’t afford them, let us know. We strive to provide our patients with affordable, quality implant-supported dentures and we’ll work with you so that you can afford the implants that you need.

Are Denture Implants a Better Choice Than Regular Dentures?

Implant dentures are a superior choice for those who want a full set of teeth in their mouth at all times, and who want to avoid the embarrassment that can accompany traditional dentures that slip and slide and fall out at the most inopportune times. With proper maintenance, denture implants are a one-time investment. You don’t have to worry about breakage because they’re permanently installed, and they don’t require special maintenance. Maintain a regimen of good oral hygiene and they shouldn’t need to be replaced. Call Long Wharf Dental Group at (203) 764-2386 if you want to learn more or schedule your first consultation.

Is the Care Regimen the Same for Implant-supported Dentures and Teeth?

Denture implants require brushing at least twice daily — in the morning and in the evening. You should also floss regularly. Your dentist may recommend that you use a proxabrush for deep cleaning and a floss threader for areas that are hard to reach. It’s also prudent to use an antibacterial mouthwash and have regular dental checkups. With this type of care, your denture implants should last for decades or the rest of your life.
